Color foldersHey Folders! - Classic folder labels for OS X.

Color icons for color labels. Hey Folders! adds colored folder icons to Apple's Finder. Instead of a generic icon, labeled folders show up in the appropriate color.

1.0 Beta 2

Requires
Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)

Download the Hey Folders! disk image. It includes Hey Folders! 1.0 Beta 2.

Installation

Please follow these steps in order to install Hey Folders! properly:

  • Drag Hey Folders! from the disk image to your Applications or Utilities folder
Since Hey Folders! is a background application, Utilities is probably a better choice.
  • Launch Hey Folders! from your hard drive
This will start the plug-in for the current session. Do not launch Hey Folders! from the disk image.
  • Restart Finder
Choose Force Quit... from the System menu. Select Finder from the application list and press the Relaunch button. This causes Finder to re-render it's icons.

Labeled folders now should appear in the label's color. If you like what you see you can make it permanent and:

  • Add Hey Folders! to your Startup Items
Start System Preferences and open Accounts preferences. Select the Startup Items tab and add Hey Folders! as the very first item of the list. From now on, Hey Folders! is automatically started each time you log in.

If you would like to disable Hey Folders! remove it's entry from the Startup Items. The next time you log in Hey Folders! will not be started.

Known Bugs and Problems

Search results, open and save dialogs still show the generic folder icon.

If you encounter a bug, please file a bug-report.

Disclaimer

Hey Folders! uses the mach_inject and mach_override packages to alter one of Finder's private internal methods. It has been tested with Mac OS X 10.3. Although it's unlikely that Apple changes the used method, the current version may not be compatible with later Mac OS X versions. Use it at your own risk.

Reviews

I'd like to see your review at MacUpdate and VersionTracker (requires login).

It's in the Background

Hey Folders! is a background application (also called daemon). It does not have a GUI, nor does it show up in the dock.

10.3 Only

If you are looking for a tool that brings label functionality to Mac OS X 10.2, Unsanity's Labels X might be the right choice.
